A little preparation makes building a Question Set fast and predictable. This section covers what you need in place first — access, a clear scope, and your Enrolments — without assuming any system integration is switched on.
Check your access
You'll need two things to follow this guide: the ability to sign in to your StudentSense workspace, and the permission to create and edit Question Sets. Most Survey IT and Student Experience team members are set up with both. You'll find everything for building a Question Set under the Manage menu, in Evaluation setup. If you can open the workspace but Evaluation setup isn't available, ask your StudentSense administrator to grant the relevant role - managing Enrolments and creating Question Sets can be granted separately.
Set up single sign-on
StudentSense uses your university's single sign-on (SSO) for both students and educators. This is the one integration the platform does rely on - but it's an authentication step, not the data-loading integration described in Section 02, so it doesn't change the lean, per-step way you load Enrolments. Both Microsoft and Google are supported. Your institution has most likely already configured SSO with StudentSense. With it configured, StudentSense can:
- Pre-configure each student's account with the subjects they need to evaluate.
- Ensure each evaluation is completed only once, by the named student.
- Give educators seamless access to their own reports as soon as they're available.
If you haven't configured SSO, please submit a help ticket or email help@studentsense.com.
Decide what you're evaluating
Before building anything, settle the scope: which subjects this evaluation covers and which teaching period it runs in. Just as important is deciding what you'll want to report on afterwards.
Prepare your Enrolments
Because we're assuming no integration, you'll load Enrolments into StudentSense yourself - but this is deliberately lightweight. There's no mega export to wrangle: each step of configuration asks for a simple 2–4 column CSV, and for smaller cohorts (up to around 5,000 enrolments) you can even copy and paste straight from Excel. At minimum, the data needs to say which students are taking which subjects; higher data levels just add a column or two (educator, faculty and department, or student tags).
Pre-flight checklist
When every line below is true, you're ready to build your first Question Set.
- I can sign into StudentSense and have access to Evaluations and Question Sets.
- Single sign-on (Microsoft or Google) is configured for students and educators.
- I have my survey questions drafted and ready to enter into the Question Set.
- I've agreed the scale and any score thresholds with stakeholders.
